Moodle Training November 12, 2008

Moodle.org is the place to go. Get add ons, etc. Be very careful adding to your Moodle

TJ can add names, etc. to your site...he will do it, not us.

Moodle can:
Forums, Glossaries, Wikis, Assigments, Assessments, Choices (polls) Scorm/AICC Packages, Interactive databases, Interactive Lessons, Text pages, Labels, Web pages, Links to Resourced, IMX Content, surveys, Journal/blog, Workshops (students submit work, put a rubric in, teacher can have students be required to do the grading before student can submit), etc.

Blogs are locked, so students are protected. Moodle is extension of room.

Surname is last name

example.com

Be careful that what we assign can cascade down. Do not let a student be a teacher.

To CREATE A COURSE:

Course format Decide how to break up coure...by week or topic?
LAMS pre done
SCORM pre done
Social format is social oriented things
Topics format (Blogs format)
Weekly format will format weekly by date...it can be confusing

Grading program is sophisticated....would recommend not doing it at first until teacher has time to work with it.

Chameleon no....takes too long to download

Set enrollment duration set

Stay away from groups for now, again, sophisticated

Set enrollment key is case sensitive(room number is a good idea)

After you create course, assign teacher. Encourage teachers to make an account. Moodle.cliu.org

If students have an email...have them use that to have reports and news forums sent to them.

Never answer a student unless you are in your Moodle account or an account that is archived.

Wait 24 hours for an email, check junk email as well

Give teachers index cards for their name and password, in the next session they might forget their username and passwords!

Make sure everyone is force subscribed forever!!

Be sure to save!!!

Click to Mail Now

The more on the page, the longer it takes to download. Watch for denial service, students can send and bring the site down.

When typing label, leave a space at top!!

Make a new window for the resource in the formatting

Do not use Messages in Administration

Make sure to backup the course. You will not need to save users, for next year. If you set it to users, potential problem with all the data. Will take too long. Recommend do not back up logs.

When teachers say their course cannot back up, check for what all they are backing up, there is probably too much.

Aides are not to be teachers, they are non-editing teachers

After backup, don't keep the files on the course site. Download and backup somewhere else!

Dave, for UStreaming: Ports 1935 and 6667 need to be open
Open for TCP/UPD

From Virginia: Might be a good idea to set the tone, 21st Century mind, keynote speaker
--arrange classrooms in 21st Century
--title for sessions, give thought to this. Instead of "Wiki Widgets" give it a name to have teachers start to put in a broader way. "How to use wikis in the Bio word" Use terms and vocab that goes with subject, or use HOTS, etc.
--Open space, questions to plant to get the discussion rolling.

Saturday, Noon to 5:00pm for the CFF pre-conference at PETE&C

Be sure to check the Webinars. Google Earth is coming up. Schedule on the Moodle or Ed Hub.

Tell Virginia about an outstanding teacher that she can interview for "Spotlight"
